Pump Up the Volume’s first book club meeting for the new OCWW year will be held in person at the fabulous new bookstore The Pile, 7117B W. Roosevelt Rd in Berwyn.

The book we’re pumping is
Down the Steep

Turn To Kill A Mockingbird on its head, and you have April Nauman’s Down the Steep (Regal House Publishing, 2023) a gorgeously written, poignant coming-of-age tale, which courageously explores issues of racism, sexism, and humanity in a flashback to an earlier time that feels—frighteningly—far too much like our own. Come meet our esteemed group member and exceptional fellow author, who will share her thoughts and hear from you on a novel containing all the hallmarks of a future classic. Space is limited to 12 attendees, so please sign up at earliest opportunity.

BIOA.D. Nauman is a literary author and educator in Chicago whose second novel, DOWN THE STEEP, will be released in October 2023. Her short fiction has appeared in Chicago Quarterly Review, Willow Springs, TriQuarterly, Roanoke Review, and many other journals. Nauman’s work has been recognized in Best American Short Stories and the Pushcart Prize anthology, produced by Stories on Stage, broadcast on NPR, and granted an Illinois Arts Council Literary Award. Her first novel, Scorch, was recently re-released in an ebook StoryBundle.

Nauman’s fiction investigates the sociopolitical in the personal, especially the impact of culture on identity, the mechanisms of power in personal relationships, and the challenges of life in a hypercapitalist society that, despite our democratic ideals, necessitates inequality.

Now a resident of Oak Park, Nauman grew up mostly in Tidewater, Virginia.
